Are there small children in your home? Or perhaps you have small children who visit often? Have you thought about childproofing your home against electrical shocks?
According to experts, most electrical shocks caused to children are from children chewing on electrical wires or inserting their fingers or other small objects into an electrical outlet, both preventable disasters.
Children explore by using their sense of touch and taste, and they love touching and putting things in their mouths. It is essential to prevent them from inserting their fingers or small objects in an electrical outlet, pull on cables or put wires or extension cords in their mouth.

All families use numerous appliances every day. Following are tips to keep your loved one safe:
- Consider installing a tamper-resistant outlet since this type of outlet requires two objects to be inserted at the same time to produce electrical power. We would recommend this type of outlet combined with a Sliding outlet cover or a Box outlet cover for extra security.
- There are different gadgets you can use to protect your child from accessing an electrical outlet. Many people use an outlet plug, which we believe is not the most secure due to them being small and can themselves be a choking hazard. Here are the two we recommend: A Sliding outlet cover is good alternatives since it closes when you unplug an appliance. The children cannot remove it. A Box outlet cover is another great alternative since you can remove it and keep devices plugged in.
- .If you have a baby monitor or lamps in your baby’s room, make sure the electrical cords are secured where the toddler cannot reach and at least three feet away from the crib.
- Do not keep any appliances near sinks or bathtubs where they could accidentally fall in the water. All outlets near water sources such as Kitchen Counter, Washrooms, Laundry Rooms, pools have ground-fault circuit interrupters.
- Secure and hide all appliances electrical cords. You may want to consider making an out of reach area for all your chargeable devices.
- Double-check all your electrical cords and appliances and repair or replace any damaged power cords as they are a danger.
- Install carbon monoxide and fire alarm detectors in your children’s bedroom.
- Teach older children how to safely plug and unplug cords safely by explaining to them never to overload outlets and not to yank cables from the wall. It is essential to explain to children from a young age how dangerous electricity can be. Use appropriate and easy language.
If your child or toddler gets an electric shock, turn off any power source and immediately seek medical care. You can never tell if there are internal injuries.
